What you will need:

• Purple cabbage
• Water
• Icecube tray
• a range of household ingredients

Chemistry gets a little crazy with the purple cabbage PH indicator experiment. Explore the PH levels in any number of household ingredients by dropping them into purple cabbage water. The purple water will magically change before your eyes, indicating an acidic ingredient (pink) or an alkaline ingredient (dark blue), and any number of shades in between. You can then experiment further by adding an acidic ingredient to an alkaline indicator to magically transform it back to neutral (purple).

* have children guess which ingredients are acidic and which are alkaline
* chart your findings on a piece of paper
* ask children to share their theories about why the purple water changes, does it have anything to do with the color of the ingredient you are adding? Why? Why not?
